PARKERIZING
In addition to being a super finish for rough service and tough weather, parkerizing is a good choice for the firearm that has gotten rusty and/or badly pitted, but still functions well. When bluing is not practical, since you can't polish the bottom of a pit, parkerizing, because of the process, removes the rust and profiles the metal so that the final result is a finish that nearly completely hides the imperfections and protects the whole piece. Don't give up on an old favorite just because it's not pretty - get it parkerized.
The Shooter’s Roost offers both manganese and heavy zinc Parkerizing
finishes. Both have advantages based on applications. Manganese provides
a better resistance used for a final finish. Although Zinc can be
used as a final finish, it proves itself to be best when used as an
undercoat for a “spray and bake” finish.
Parkerizing, or phosphate coatings, have been used for over 200
years in various forms due to their oil trapping, non-reflective
characteristics when used in severe weather conditions. Typical
Parkerizing finished color is dark gray but may vary based on the
type of alloy in the steel. Color variations are achieved primarily
by use of different lubricants such as Cosmoline@, linseed oil,
gun oil etc. Brass, aluminum and stainless steel may not be Parkerized.
This process includes the following steps:
- Complete disassembly and inspection of parts
- Grease, rust and “crud” removal
- Bead blasting
- “Hot soap” oil and polish removal
- Thorough cold rinse
- Hot rinse
- Hot Parkerizing
- Scrubbing cold rinse
- STOP HERE if you intend on putting a “spray and bake”
finish over the Parkerizing
- Post treatment solution bath
- Wipe down and oil
- Reassembly
Time required to perform these steps will vary depending on the
type, age, style and condition of the firearm.
